Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Hands On - 10 Things We Learned

1. Cal Kestis Isn't Just "Another Jedi With A Blue Lightsaber"

Lastly - and this is perhaps the coolest surprise of all - even though I only spent a brief amount of time with protagonist Cal Kestis (portrayed by Gotham's Cameron Monaghan), I have to say he left me wanting more.

In many ways, yes, he could be construed as another pale Jedi with a blue lightsaber - something Star Wars has in abundance, it must be said - but there's an edge to Cal that we haven't seen with other protagonists, and not in a clichéd 'inherently drawn to the dark side' kind of way. That could change over the course of the story of course, but what I saw from Cal in the short amount of time I had with him was an independent, inquisitive and curt individual who'd been forced to mature beyond his years.

He isn't an idealistic young farm-boy or another victim of Imperial occupation, but instead a figure who survived the Clone Wars and was forced to adapt in order to survive. That's an exciting new dynamic to play with, especially as the game is set towards the beginning of the franchise's inter-war years and thus leaves plenty of potential ways to resolve his journey by the time it concludes.

That's really exciting, and given Cameron Monaghan's acting chops, it's clear ol' Cal possesses oodles of potential. Here's hoping it all comes together come November 15th.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
