Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge Review
Adding yet more sizzle to the steak are the two main modes on offer Story and Arcade. The Story mode is a much more relaxed affair (or as relaxed as you can be with all of this insanity going on around you) and ties levels together with a hub world that allows you to meet up with different cameo characters and engage in collect-a-thon side missions for them.
I would say that my only gripe is that collecting the required items usually involves little more than breaking all the boxes or containers in an area which left me thinking that maybe a few of these could have been made a little more challenging to make the subsequent reward feel more earned. However, this didn't detract at all from the amazing time I was having with this game.
Arcade mode is for the true believers, as the difficulty is ramped up by pitting you against a gauntlet of levels with increased challenges and tighter issuing of lives and continues. This is where the purists will go to hone skills learned through the Story Mode and feels like a great second course to dive into immediately after felling the final boss.
All in all, there's so much to praise about this title that it's almost staggering. The love and care put into each and every facet makes Shredder's Revenge a must-own experience for Shell-heads all around the world. I love that Dotemu is continuing to evolve the beat 'em up genre through innovative design and a truckload of respect for the source material, and as a result TMNT: Shredder's Revenge is a beautiful sorbet for the soul that will hopefully wake up many who have been sleeping on the genre.
