The Best PlayStation Game Every Year 1994 - 2024

4. 2021 - Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Remake aside, Ratchet & Clank missed 8 years and a whole console generation between Into the Nexus and Rift Apart, and, in that time, mascot platformers were few and far between.

So it was incredibly gratifying to see the PS5 debut of the duo land in both the franchise’s best sellers and best scorers.

Most wonderfully it was - and may still remain - the best advertisement of the PlayStation 5’s power. With dimensions being the main gimmick, having an adventure game that can instantly and seamlessly jump from world to world was mind-bending.

Not to mention the lighting, the colour palette and the particle effects that fly in every direction during combat with absolutely no drop in visual fidelity. The comparisons to the 2002 game were clear: once again, Insomniac put together a stunning, diverse, detail-heavy game that pulled players along in the name of fun.

But lest we forget that Insomniac games are much more than visual delights. Ratchet & Clank had that moreish feeling that the studio routinely crafts. Whilst technically more linear than other games in the series, Rift Apart still gives players plenty of choice - weapons, upgrades and so on - and then pulls them by the Lombax ears into a riotous adventure.

In a time where video games strive to be cutting edge, sometimes they lose sight of the fun and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart oozes joy from every dimension-hopping pore.
