Though The Game Awards fizzled to a fairly anti-climactic finale, fans did get one genuine surprise late in the show, and given that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate literally released within hours of the ceremony concluding, it couldn't have been more perfectly timed.

Persona 5's protagonist Joker was revealed to be joining the roster of Nintendo's acclaimed fighter next year as the 76th roster member in a paid DLC update.

You can either buy Joker individually or purchase the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter Pass, which promises five new fighters each with their own stage and music.

Did anyone see this madness coming? What a neat, wonderfully weird surprise.
