The Game That BROKE The Gaming Industry

Nowadays, Night Trap actually has a T rating from the ESRB, and compared to many violent modern games, it pales in comparison. This seems especially strange, though, given it was one of the focal points of the debate around violent and mature titles, whereas now it's just not considered a big deal.

The aforementioned 25th Anniversary version barely raised an eyebrow, and Nintendo - as the company that famously wanted a "bloodless" version of Mortal Kombat - seem far more relaxed than their 90s counterpart.

Though conversations about game ratings was an inevitability, it's almost surreal to think that Night Trap was subject to so much public outrage, as its contents contains nothing more intense than you could find from reading Dracula.

While it's creators were no doubt unhappy about the reaction it received, it's worth mentioning that the scandal surrounding the game does appear to have massively increased sales across the board, as many were interested to play themselves and develop their own thoughts on its content.

It's unlikely that age restrictions will ever stop a teenager from getting GTA V one way or another - but any time it does, they can thank the likes of Night Trap, Mortal Kombat, DOOM and a handful more for making it happen.
