The Binding of Isaac was a game that thrived on its serious subject matter, combining it with exhilarating gameplay and innovative design to provide a truly unique experience. As The Legend of Bum-bo is a direct successor, it is unlikely that McMillen would have forgotten the 9 years of work put into developing Isaac.
McMillen has promised "animated cutscenes that will make you cry" and although the cutscenes available so far are just as goofy as the trailers, this may be a bait and switch for later in the game when more serious details emerge.
Don't expect the game to reach the serious philosophical depth of Isaac, however, it's likely that some intriguing new information will be revealed, particularly in regards to Isaac himself.
