The Medium REVIEW: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
5. Split-Screen Mechanic Is Awesome
As The Medium's big hook, at key points in the story Marianne will grab her head, be somewhat in pain, and the screen will split in two.
Here you'll see what everything would look like in the real world, plus what Marianne can interact with in the other dimension. Spirits take form and have conversations with you, formerly blocked doors become accessible if you completely detach from your mortal self, and side-by-side, it's almost like Bloober Team made two different biomes and smashed them together.
The result is immediately visually memorable, and although you can argue the devs could've done more with the mechanic gameplay-wise, other than scouring environments, there is a late-game set-piece that really took me by surprise.
