The Outer Worlds: 10 Ways It'll Blow Fallout Out The Water
4. Enhancements To The RPG Mechanics
Obsidian seem to be making major enhancements to the RPG elements of Outer Worlds. Alongside a wide-ranging character creator, they have made tweaks to the standard RPG format in order to deliver a unique gameplay experience.
Firstly, it may be possible to play through the entire game without killing a single character. The inclusion of this feature will massively increase the replay value of the game. Those who prefer to take either a stealthy or more diplomatic approach will welcome this option over being forced into head-on combat at certain points of the game. This could also create a challenge for the speed-running community, seeing who could make the quickest “pacifist run.”
Another cool feature Obsidian have added is a perk/flaw system. Whilst perks are pretty common in RPGs, Outer Worlds will allow the player to assign flaws (fear of fire, for example) to their character. Taking a flaw would also allow the player to assign an additional perk. This could lead to a large variety of character builds, as well as some hilarious outcomes.
Fallout’s perk trees differ in quality from game to game, with the next instalment likely needing to step up in order to match that of Outer Worlds.
