Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5: 10 Extreme Sports Sequels We Actually Needed

3. 1080 Snowboarding

Nintendo's exclusive entry into the extreme sports genre was one given the royalist of treatments - Shigeru "Yeah, I created Mario and Zelda, so what?" Miyamoto elected to put his name down as producer, but it was actually coded by a two-man team of Croc-creator Giles Goddard and Colin Reed. That made for quite the powerhouse trio, but despite it being incredible well received by console owners and the gaming press in general, 1080 never saw even the barest whiff of a followup. In fact, Nintendo have hardly any games to throw in the pot when it comes to representing extreme sports or the basic Tony Hawk's mould, hence this particular entry is fast coming up on its 20th Anniversary with no console-specific contemporaries. Gameplay to this day feels pretty responsive and tactile, a sensation that back in 1998 made it very ahead of its time. With SSX arriving three years later and injecting some ridiculous tricks and visual oomph to spice things up, any Nintendo fan who got hands-on with this back in the day still has a massive soft spot for what could essentially still be a tentpole franchise.
