8 Games We Love Even Though They SUCK

3. Alan Wake

Alan Wake
Remedy

Alan Wake is perhaps the quintessential example of a game that's an absolute chore to actually play despite touting some of the most potent and intoxicating atmosphere of any video game ever.

Story has always been the strong suit of developer Remedy, and this tantalisingly twisted mystery-thriller lovingly channels Stephen King and David Lynch in near-equal measure.

But the moment-to-moment gameplay, characterised by weakening enemies with light and then shooting them, gets old incredibly fast, especially as this idea isn't much iterated on as the game progresses.

It's difficult to argue with anyone who finds the gameplay unbearably monotonous after a few hours, but the plot, characters, and overall vibes are so overpoweringly rich that they manage to make Alan Wake a ride well worth taking regardless.

Thankfully Remedy seriously levelled things up for the recent sequel, whose gameplay is decidedly more engaging throughout while still delivering atmosphere to match its predecessor.
