The Last Guardian is a brilliant action-adventure game from the geniuses behind Shadow of the Colossus, in which players control a human boy as he teams up with a huge griffin-like creature called Trico to escape dangerous, otherworldly ruins.

The gameplay is all about contrast - as the boy, we're relatively slow and weak, but can reach smaller areas that Trico, in all of his towering stature, cannot.

Comparatively, Trico can leap across huge gaps, effortlessly transport the boy between locations, put up a fight against giant enemies, and even shoot lightning from its tail at certain points. 

But to be clear, Trico isn't a playable character and can only be guided by a limited set of context commands.

The boy is just a boy, and that's exactly the point - though Trico is orders of magnitude more powerful than his charge, neither can survive their journey without the skills of the other.

For as divisive as The Last Guardian's gameplay remains almost a full decade later - particularly Trico's tendency to be less-than-obedient to your requests - it was a neat trick to keep our all-powerful pet entirely out of our active control.
