8 Side Characters Who Are More POWERFUL Than You

4. Martin Septim - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion offers up some fun subversions of the prototypical hero's journey, because while the player character known as the Hero of Kvatch plays an instrumental role in preserving Tamriel's future, they're ultimately a facilitator of another hero's rise to greater heights.

There's a strong argument to be made that the real protagonist of Oblivion is Martin Septim, the secret son of Uriel Septim VII, who the player spends a huge chunk of the game nudging towards his ultimate destiny.

That destiny? Transcending his human form and becoming something far more powerful in order to defeat Mehrunes Dagon, the Daedric Prince of Destruction.

In the game's climax, Martin shatters the Amulet of Kings, merging himself with the spirit of Akatosh, the Dragon-God of Time. As in, Martin straight-up becomes a dragon, kicks Dagon's ass, and enters the afterlife to join his ancestors.

So, yeah, the Hero of Kvatch can't really compete with that, even if he's plenty great by any conventional metric of heroism.
