The fourth main Crash Bandicoot game, The Wrath of Cortex, introduced fans to Crunch Bandicoot - a genetically altered cyborg version of Crash which was created by Dr. Neo Cortex with the intent of destroying the plucky marsupial once and for all.

While Crunch is on the face of it a fearsome superweapon, he's also effectively brainwashed by Cortex, and once Crash battles Crunch at the end of the game, he manages to free him from Cortex's control.

And with that, Crunch finally has free will for the first time in his strange existence, at which point he decides to join Crash as a member of his unconventional family.

Though Crunch hasn't made substantial appearances in more recent Crash games, the series' latest entry Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time did confirm that Crunch's face turn is still canon, given that he makes a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in one level.

Considering that Crunch is a bit of a fan favourite, hopefully he might make a more notable appearance in a future mainline Crash game.
