No one ever expects the Inquisition and in space, those who ensure loyalty to the God-Emperor and the governments and cults who worship him and follow his beliefs are just as bloodthirsty as those who would burn people alive and purge the heretical.

The Inquisition in 40K is truly feared and respected by the citizens and soldiers of the Milky Way, as they have power above nearly every other politician and general, and are even able to use Exterminatus if a world is too corrupted by the horrors of space.

Unlike any other military branch in the Imperium of Man, the Inquisition has only one enemy, man. They are trained to be the Imperium's version of the secret police, infiltrating, deceiving, and murdering any person or organization that has views even slightly different from the Imperium as a whole.

The Inquisitor's belief in the rules is more devoted than any other religious members of the Imperium, and as such, they have extremely strict views on how the galaxy should follow the Emperor's will, which of course means anyone could be a heretic even on accident and yet straying even slightly in the view of an Inquisitor could mean death or worse.
