Watch Dogs: 10 Reasons The Haters Are Wrong

6. Slow-Burn Narrative Totally Works

There was a time when we didn't care about action movies being over-the-top and throwing out occasionally dumb moments or lines of dialogue that (at the time) were actually regarded as something brilliant, as they gave us a reason to watch them over and over again. Now Watch Dogs isn't going to be winning any awards for scriptwriting any time soon, but it's also not any cause for concern either - it has a perfectly serviceable introductory few hours, before Aiden gets his hands on a much more Batman-esque base HQ, the firing up of which is a great moment in the game as you hack a set of bridges so that only you can enter and exit your island abode. Pearce's razor-throated delivery is a bit old hat after a couple of generations trying to do their best Solid Snake, but like with Deus Ex: Human Revolution there's only so many times you can roll your eyes at what the game isn't doing i.e. portraying relatable characters on a level more akin to Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, and instead just accept and enjoy what we do have - a great fun action-focussed title with some gruffly-delivered hard-man lines, all tied up in a neat revenge-arc narrative. It's something we've paid to see a million times on the silver screen, so why not here? Still, Aiden randomly going to choke Clara as the first thing he appears to do to a woman that opposes him was a bit weird wasn't it?
