Remember GM Mode? It was like simulating your very own wrestling show and pretending you were Vince McMahon. You got to hire wrestlers, book them against anyone you want, create angles and storylines, and even switch up the roster. If you were able to maintain a healthy wrestling organization for an entire year, you were given a trophy for all your hard work. Much like the manager modes in other sporting games, it gave an entirely new perspective on playing a wrestling game. It felt good to be the GM, and it's something that the more recent WWE games have been trying to amplify with the WWE Universe Mode. While Universe Mode can be enjoyable, it admittedly feels a lot less personal than it used to. Instead of being the GM who had an office and could speak to the wrestlers one on one, Universe Mode gives players a list of scheduled matches that you're free to change on a whim. There are random moments thrown in to change the pace such as run ins, attacks backstage, and more, but nothing ever really feels controlled. It would be nice to see GM Mode return and bring back the bare basics that made the mode so addictive.
