Set in Ferelden, you play as a Grey Warden, an ancient sect fated to vanquish the Archdemon when it attempts to rampage through the land.

Of interest is that in character creation, you can do the standard RPG choice of races and gender, with Human, Elf, and Dwarf, but also social class. It is just one choice indicative of the immersive, detailed, and high quality writing. No one play through is going to be the same as the other, though it will demand a great deal of time.
