10 Everyday Objects Horror Movies RUINED For You

2. Hand Saw - Saw (2004)

Saw Bathroom Scene
Lionsgate

James Wan and Leigh Whannell couldn’t have imagined the franchise that would unfold before them when they put together the first Saw film on a $1 million budget, and yet audiences loved it enough to afford it nine sequels and counting. While the quality of these films has been wildly inconsistent to say the least, the first Saw still stands as an icon of modern horror, providing the genre with many unpleasant traps and kills, often using common or household objects repurposed in horrible ways.

Whannell himself plays Adam Stanheight, a photographer who wakes up chained by the leg to the piping in a subterranean bathroom with oncologist Dr Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes), and a dead body on the floor between them. The mysterious mass-murderer Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) has brought into a game that will test their resolve and desire to live, while forcing them to reckon with the less moral elements of their pasts. Oh, and the only objects that can save them? Two rusty hacksaws.

And while the traditional hand saw is not exactly the safest and most unassuming of household objects, it wasn't until this film that we began to see it in a different light. A classic example of Chekhov’s gun, Dr Gordon does indeed put the saw to use, screaming and turning the same shade as the tub in the process. Now, gone are the days of cutting wood for the fire without thinking about him hacking himself off at the shins.
