10 Horror Movie Characters Who Didn't Know They Were The Monster

Jim Carrey is one of the most iconic names comedy movies have seen across the past four decades, but in 2007 he tried something completely different: a dark, gritty mystery thriller with barely a laugh or flailing of his limbs in sight.

This wasn't like Ace Ventura's misadventures in trying to find a missing dolphin or a sacred bat; this was darker than anything the actor had ever done. After Walter (Carrey) was gifted a book by his wife all about an obsession with the number 23, he began to notice too many similarities between the narrator and his own life to be a coincidence.

The key character, Detective Fingerling, was the product of an anonymous author, with Walter diving into a crazed search to find that writer. Fingerling was a killer, and the book was the author's confession, but even with Walter certain it was connected to himself somehow, the continuing sticking point was that he simply couldn't have been a murderer. 

However, the big twist of the story revealed that Walter was in fact the author, confessing to the murder of his one-time girlfriend. A traumatic head injury had erased all memory of the event, and so when chance (or fate) brought the book back into his life 13 years later, he began viciously hunting himself down without even knowing it.
