10 Horror Movie Final Girls Who Actually Weren't

4. Joan Leaven - Cube

Wrong Turn 2
Lionsgate

Up until the last 10 minutes of Cube, if you asked most viewers who they thought would be the sole survivor, the overwhelming majority would've surely picked Leaven (Nicole de Boer), a big-brained maths student who appears to be both the smartest and most sensible person in the room.

Every other character seems like an obvious victim one way or another, but Leaven feels like a natural leader, helping the group deduce which rooms are safe through her understanding of prime numbers. However, Cube ends with Leaven being mortally wounded by the crazed psychopath Quentin (Maurice Dean Wint), who is himself killed while trying to escape.

Ultimately, the only survivor is the most vulnerable member of the group - Kazan (Andrew Miller), an autistic young man who is seen exiting the cube to parts unknown in the film's final seconds.

While it was sad to see a character as resourceful as Leaven cut down at the final hurdle, the dramatic irony of Kazan being the only one to make it out alive was most certainly worth it.
