10 Horror Movie Plot Twists That Were Totally Pointless
7. Candyman - William Has Created A New Candyman
2021's mostly underwhelming Candyman reboot is another movie that shot itself in the foot with a needless twist, and much like Last Night in Soho, it undermined its own themes with this.
In this legacy sequel, Anthony (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) becomes fascinated by the legend of Candyman, and he creates an art piece that reminds people of the story, unintentionally unleashing a new wave of murders, albeit one carried out by a different Candyman to the one seen in the original films. As is explained in this one, several murdered black men have acted as the Candyman over the decades. And then, after being stung by a bee, Anthony begins to change.
In its risible final act, it turns out a local laundromat owner named William (Colman Domingo) wants to transform Anthony into the latest Candyman by having him gunned down by police, and this is a goal he eventually succeeds in, although William's killed by Anthony's girlfriend Brianna (Teyonah Parris) before he gets to see his creation in action, making this twist feel even more unnecessary.
Having the latest Candyman be the creation of a vengeful African American instead of systematic oppression just felt off, in all honesty, and it's telling that not even an actor as brilliant as Colman Domingo could make this nonsensical twist villain remotely credible.
