10 Horror Movies That Flopped Hard In 2025
1. Ash
Ash is the new film from Flying Lotus (Kuso), and though sold with a couple of trippy trailers touting an intense two-hander between Eiza González and Aaron Paul, it was dead on arrival.
Though broadly well-received by critics following its premiere at SXSW, Ash fell short of even meagre industry projections, grossing less than $700k in its opening weekend, far from the expected $2 million. Even though it was released in barely 1,000 U.S. cinemas, that's rough, and by the end of its brief theatrical run, it totted up just $1.1 million in receipts.
While we don't know how much Ash actually cost, it clearly wasn't super cheap, given the elaborate visual effects and name actors, so it faces quite the steep climb to recoup its budget on streaming.
As for why it flopped? Cosmic horror is a tough sell to mainstream genre fans at the best of times, and between the low-key cinema release and so-so marketing, it never really had much of a chance to break out.
