10 Horror Movies That Flopped Hard In 2025
2. M3GAN 2.0
And now we come to the single most surprising horror flop of the entire year, M3GAN 2.0.
The original killer android movie was a surprise hit at the start of 2023, grossing an astonishing $181.8 million against a mere $12 million budget, ensuring that Blumhouse swiftly greenlit a sequel.
M3GAN 2.0 arrived with a much heftier $25 million budget, but considering the enduring viral success of the title character, it just didn't seem like this sequel could fail.
But, oh, how wrong we were, as M3GAN 2.0 ended up grossing just $39.1 million - barely 20% of the original's global total.
As for what happened? A big problem here is that M3GAN 2.0 isn't really a horror movie at all. Instead, the filmmakers opted to ambitiously shift the tone to sci-fi comedy, but this evidently wasn't the vibe that most fans of the original were interested in. And so they largely stayed home, with producer Jason Blum even later admitting that he and those involved "got too excited" by believing that fans would follow M3GAN to a new genre.
And like that, a cash cow with the potential for innumerable smash hit sequels was abruptly killed off.
