Honestly, the fact that The Toxic Avenger got released at all basically feels like a minor miracle, let alone that Cineverse unleashed it in almost 2,000 U.S. cinemas.
After all, back in the summer of 2024, the superhero horror remake was deemed "unreleasable" due to its "out there" nature, no matter that it had already premiered at festivals to solid reviews in late 2023.
It finally hit cinemas this past August, though, and while the budget of the Peter Dinklage-led film has never been publicly revealed, it was clearly higher than its mere $3.4 million box office total.
Let's be real here: The Toxic Avenger is an extremely niche IP even within horror fandom, and the marketing made basically zero attempt to appeal to younger folk who know nothing about the original movie. It was never going to make bank at the box office, and will now exist on streaming as a curio for fans of grindhouse-flavoured schlock to discover for themselves.
