9. The Demons - The Gate

In The Gate, a young boy called Glen (Stephen Dorff) accidentally activates a portal in his backward, releasing a horde of evil beasts into his home.

Even though The Gate has a captivating premise, it takes forever to get going. Fortunately, it's worth pushing through, since the visuals for the critters are breath-taking.

Due to their small size, viewers will assume the diminutive demons are brought to life with stop-motion. Although this is true in certain shots, it's clear the movements of the pint-sized beasties are too smooth for that technique, which involves capturing dozens of still images and stitching them together to create animated movement.

More often than not, the demons are actors in rubber costumes. However, the filmmakers utilise forced perspective in order to give the illusion the creatures are much smaller than they are. With this technique, the critters seen in The Gate look astonishingly realistic when interacting with the human characters.

The most impressive use of forced perspective is when a zombie collapses on the ground, causing it to transform into a dozen of the tiny creatures on impact.

Seriously, how did they do that?!
