8. Right In The Face - Squirm

lifeforce movie
American International Pictures

Squirm centres around a town being invaded by millions of man-eating worms. The script may be terrible and the acting is lousy, but Jeff Lieberman's 1976 feature has creepy crawlies who are sure to make viewers... well... squirm.

One scene in particular that stands out is when Roger (R. A. Dow) has his head dunked into a worm-infested lake, causing the carnivorous pests to burrow into his face.

What makes this shot effective is the fact it COULD have looked terrible. If the actor had a bunch of worm-like props glued to his face, this moment could've come across as embarrassingly fake.

Instead, the SFX crew had animatronic worms burrow into a thin prosthetic on the performer's face, so it appears as if the critters are genuinely digging through his head.

It's worth mentioning that this incredible shot was devised by the seven-time Oscar winner, Rick Baker. Long before working on An American Werewolf in London, Men in Black, and Michael Jackson's Thriller, Baker served as the makeup designer for this forgotten B-movie. Even though Squirm was one of the first films Baker worked on, scenes like this prove he was a natural talent from the get-go.
