7. The Mouth Scene - Mirrors
In Mirrors, the life of disgraced ex-cop, Ben Carson (Kiefer Sutherland), turns upside down when he discovers an evil entity that can travel through reflective surfaces. When nobody takes Ben's claims seriously, he's forced to take matters into his own hands.
Despite boasting an intriguing concept, Mirrors is never as clever or as entertaining as it should be. Mike Flanagan's Oculus, which was released five years later, explored the same idea far more effectively, further highlighting Mirrors' wasted potential.
In the film's defence, it has one awesome kill sequence. While Ben's sister, Angie (Amy Smart) is having a bath, the dark force appears in the mirror as her reflection. The demonic being then pulls its own mouth off, causing the same thing to happen to Angie, killing her.
Even though Amy Smart delivers a terrific performance here, it's the visual team that deserves most of the praise. Thanks to the flawless editing, realistic prosthetics, and minimal CGI, Angie's agonising death looks disturbingly real.
Mirrors itself may not leave much of an impression, but this gory death is guaranteed to live in viewers' minds for years to come.
