4. The Creature - Leviathan

In Leviathan, a team of ocean miners find themselves trapped on a scuttled ship, where they're exposed to a gene-altering virus. Unfortunately, this sea-faring creature feature offers nothing horror fans haven't already seen a million times before. The narrative is so formulaic, not even the talents of Ernie Hudson, Daniel Stern, and Peter Weller can save it.

But if there is one thing that nearly salvages this travesty, it's the practical effects. It may be a bold claim, but some of the visuals in Leviathan are almost on par with John Carpenter's The Thing. This is because the creature effects were overseen by SFX guru, Stan Winston, who lent his talents to films like Jurassic Park, Aliens, Predator, Terminator 2, and Carpenter's opus, The Thing.

Winston was given free rein by director George P. Cosmatos (of Rambo: First Blood Part II and Tombstone fame) on Leviathan, allowing him to direct the second-unit action sequences. As such, Winston was in charge of filming the monster scenes, which is why they look absolutely terrifying.
