10 More Awful Horror Movies With Incredible Special Effects

3. Freddy Makes An Entrance - A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge

After A Nightmare on Elm Street singlehandedly stopped New Line Cinema from going bankrupt, the studio wisely churned out a sequel. Even though this follow-up - titled A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge - developed a cult following, it never reaches the heights of Wes Craven's original, swapping the horror master's unique dream-hopping premise for a possession story that doesn't quite align with the franchise overall.

Having said that, Freddy's Revenge surpasses the original in one aspect - the special effects. A Nightmare on Elm Street may be a classic with some iconic visual effects work, but there is the odd dodgy effect - most notably the ending zinger where Marge is pulled in through the door by a still-alive Freddy.

The first sequel, on the other hand, goes all out with its visuals. Freddy was redesigned with discoloured skin, devilish eyes, and a slimy texture, making the dream demon scarier than ever. The scene where he rips off his scalp to show off his throbbing brain is genuinely chilling - not to mention the part where Jesse (Mark Patton) pulls back his skin to reveal the fleshy, muscle-like texture of Freddy's knitwear underneath.

Blades shoot from Jesse's fingers. An eyeball appears inside his throat. An imprint of Freddy's face pushes out of his chest. While watching this sequence, it's clear the crew went above and beyond to devise this visual marvel.

Not only is this the best special effect in the film, it's among the best special effects in the whole franchise.
