10 More Horror Movie Villains With Absolutely No Motive

Bourgeois couple Roland and Corinne Durand (Jean Yanne and Mireille Darc) are cheating on and secretly dreaming of killing each other. Perhaps the only solution, then, is to embark on an idyllic weekend getaway to the French countryside. Except things don't quite go to plan. A miles-long traffic jam plunges the film into horror as the couple witness destruction impressive not just for its scale but for the utter lack of consideration the couple afford it.

All-out road rage causes accidents at every turn, decapitated bodies lie in the streets, carjackers hide in bushes waiting to strike, and revolutionaries round people up, robbing them, assaulting them and cooking their flesh for food. While this may sound New Extremity, this is in fact the plot of New Wave pioneer Jean-Luc Godard's Weekend.

But who is the villain, and what do they want? Well, it's the French, and they seem to want nothing less than the utter destruction of contemporary society as we know it. As for the why, that's never disclosed, as Godard treats us instead to long, abstract monologues and obscure intertitles peppering the atrocities of pretty much every Frenchperson with a car, a gun or a cocked fist.
