10 More Horror Movie Villains With Absolutely No Motive
7. Tatiana - See The Sea
Part of the New Extremity movies of the late-'90s and early '00s, François Ozon's See the Sea (Regarde la mer) manages to pack a lot of grim tension into a relatively brief one-hour runtime.
Young mother Sasha (Sasha Hails) lives on the beach of a seaside village in France, caring for her baby and waiting for her husband to come home from a business trip. Enter Tatiana (Marina de Van), a vagrant camper who pitches up on the lawn and weasels her way into Sasha's life.
Things start off simply enough, as the women gradually get to know each other in brief encounters, leading to shared meals and trips along the beach. But, as Tatiana comes further into Sasha' home, she takes ever-greater liberties, and her true personality is revealed through her actions (including dipping her host's toothbrush in the toilet) and her notebook, which is full of psychotic scribblings and obsessive repetitions.
The film reaches fever pitch without Sasha ever being aware of any threat - and why would she be? Tatiana has no discernible motives, turning up, moving in, wreaking havoc, and leaving with her host dead and the baby in hand.
