10 Most Disappointing Villains From Recent Horror Movies

2. The Nasmaranian - Lee Cronin's The Mummy

The man who helmed the excellent Evil Dead Rise is directing a Mummy movie? Surefire hit, right? Sadly, it's a crushingly disappointing no.

Lee Cronin's Mummy is in all but name only. The film undertakes the possession playbook with Katie Cannon (Emily Mitchell and Natalie Grace), a young girl with self-inflicted scratches on her seriously sun-malnourished face, who has painful-looking contorted limbs, and who emits raspy breaths. Yep, we've all seen Repossessed from 1990.

Seriously though, The Exorcist checklist goes on. For Regan projectile vomiting, Katie spews green bile after gorging on a scorpion. For the wild dogs fighting ferociously at the start of the iconic 1973 supernatural horror, a pack of coyotes snarls sinisterly at Katie's father Charlie (Jack Reynor), her older brother Sebastián (Shylo Molina), and younger sister Maud (Billie Roy), thus indicating the terrible portents to come. For the demon Pazuzu, see Egyptian demon, the Nasmaranian.

Don't put away your checklist just yet. For when Regan exclaims: "F**k me! F**k me!" to a couple of doctors, a possessed Maud calls her teacher a rat-faced C-word. When Regan does, err, a certain thing with a crucifix, Katie uses the sacred holy symbol to strangle the family's kindly devout grandmother (Veronica Falcón), thereafter launching her out through a window, where she's then mauled to death by those coyotes.

We even get an Evil Dead Rise tick when Charlie visits Professor Bixler (Mark Mitchinson) and plays a recording of an international lecture on Egyptian Demonology alongside a book depicting the Nasmaranian's decidedly devilish deeds. So, that's a Control C on Danny playing a recording about the Book of the Dead, with said book nearby depicting decidedly devilish deeds.
