10 Most Vile Villains From Recent Horror Movies
You'll find that life is worthwhile if you just Smile. Or not, in these cases...
We have been treated - perhaps traumatised - to some haute horror films in recent years. The 2026 Academy Awards saw the sublime Sinners nominated for a record 16 Oscars, winning four. Guillermo del Toro's fabulous-looking Frankenstein nabbed an impressive three of the iconic golden statuettes. Amy Madigan won for Best Supporting Actress for her terrifically terrifying turn as Aunt Gladys in Weapons - and it's here where this genre naturally owes itself to heightening our anxieties.
Evil manifests in many malevolent forms. Some villains simply terrify us with their physically monstrous appearance, able to distort their bodies into outrageously otherworldly shapes, whilst others even have the ability to distort their victim's reality. Some look human enough, but beneath that seemingly benevolent exterior lies a manipulative monster capable of committing the most inhumane and heinous acts imaginable. Then there are those entities who play the classic possession game, making their victims commit the most vile and vicious acts.
The supernatural villains usually survive (here's sinisterly smiling at you, Art the Clown) for franchise purposes, naturally. But on some occasions a truly repulsive villain, especially one who has properly enraged us, will meet a deserved demise, and the grislier the better.
Either way, your fight or flight response would be thoroughly tested if you came up against any of this lovely lot. Yep, flight it is! If that's even an option.
10. Deadite Ellie - Evil Dead Rise
Poor Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) already has enough to deal with. A single mother of three children after her husband walked out on them and about to be evicted from their condemned apartment building, what she really doesn't need is for one of her kids - Danny (Morgan Davies), Bridget (Gabrielle Echols) and Kassie (Nell Fisher) - to unwittingly unleash a demonic force that ends up possessing her. Oh, Danny Boy, it's called The Book of the Dead for a reason.
From there, it's the frenetic and unrelenting havoc of horror we know and love from an Evil Dead film.
The possession of Ellie in the elevator is a violently bone-breaking, blood-dripping event. Once possessed, Deadite Ellie maims, mutilates, and manipulates her way through family and neighbours whilst bearing the series' humorous hallmarks; after ravenously removing someone's eyeball with her mouth, she spits it back out towards another person's open mouth, who then proceeds to choke to death. Ellie's relentlessness is commendable, even after having one of her legs and an arm blown off by her sister Beth (Lily Sullivan). She can also make a hell of an omelette with all the eggshells you desire.
Sutherland's phenomenal physicality, fierce and fiery facial expressions, combined with her sinister smile and chilling cackle, make Deadite Ellie one of the all-time great Evil Dead characters. Poor Ellie, if only she'd heeded her own advice and not taken the elevator after an earthquake in the first place.
As we're here, just an honourable mention to Deadite Bridget for making eating a wine glass look evilly elegant.
