10 Scrapped Horror Movie Monsters That Would Have Been Terrifying
1. The Monkey-Cat - The Fly
You would be hard pressed to find any argument against David Cronenberg's 1986 The Fly being the authority when it comes to body horror movies. In fact, simply put it's one of the finest films in all of horror, regardless of any subgenre, but what it did as a body horror in particular was special.
What is so impressive is that beyond the uncomfortable images of Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) slowly deteriorating as his body melds with that of a fly is a genuinely strong human story. That's never a given in any creature feature, and to do it so well is impressive.
This is largely why there was a particularly brutal scene left out of the final cut. Leaning into the body horror, Seth created a hideous hybrid between a monkey and cat, before having to beat it to death. In any other horror this may have been one of the crowning moments, however for The Fly, it detracted from Seth's character too much.
As said by producer Stuart Cornfield, seeing him beat an animal to death, even an abomination of his own creation such as this, would unquestionably almost force audiences to disconnect from him. So, while it would have been one of the most discomforting scenes in a movie filled with discomforting scenes, its omission was probably for the best.
