20 Best Horror Movie Kills of 2025

7. Todd - Good Boy

VHS Halloween
Shudder

So much of the discourse surrounding Good Boy came down to audiences not wanting to watch a horror film where an adorable dog dies at the end, enough that some critics flat-out spoiled the fate of the canine in their reviews.

Spoiler: the dog lives.

But folks were so distracted fretting over the fate of the central animal, Indy, that they seemed to forget about the human life at stake, Indy's owner Todd (Shane Jensen).

It's established early on that Todd is suffering from a debilitating, chronic lung condition, all while also being apparently pursued by malevolent supernatural forces which may or may not be a mere metaphor for Todd's life-threatening illness. And while you might expect Indy to somehow save Todd by the film's end, the sad truth is that the movie is really about Indy coming to terms with the impending, unstoppable demise of his owner.

In a tender final farewell, Todd tells Indy that he's a good dog but can't save him, after which he's seemingly spirited away by the forces in the basement, and we're then shown a brief glimpse of Todd's dead body in the house.

Indy is finally greeted by Todd's devastated sister Vera (Arielle Friedman), who has just discovered her brother's body and came to retrieve Indy from the basement.

So no, the dog didn't die, but his owner did, and it still stings.
