20 Horror Films Where Humans Are The Real Monsters

Drew Goddard’s meta-horror Cabin in the Woods assembles all the tropes and common setups from across the horror canon and distils them into a film that pays homage, satirises, and still serves up plenty of scares.

Here, a group of college students heads to a remote cabin in the woods for a fun getaway of partying, casual sex, and, well, bloody murder, because there’s a diary that raises an undead zombie family, or a puzzle sphere that summons an interdimensional lord of pain, or a jar of Eau de Sasquatch that… you get the picture. You see, this cabin in the woods is actually designed to bring forth any of hundreds of monsters and ghouls from an underground facility.

Yep, this is a trap cabin of sorts, controlled by corporate types who watch from cameras as the occupants are picked off one by one. And why? Well, because the Organisation behind it all has a deal with the Ancient Ones, a group of deities living under the Earth’s crust, and if they don’t make their yearly sacrifices, it’s kind of the end of the world. There are monsters of literally every variety in this flick, and yet it’s the suits, led by Sigourney Weaver’s Director, who have the blackest hearts. Whatever they get from this deal, it’s simply not worth the risk, and yet here they are, risking everything, brutally killing innocents on the regular, and literally causing the apocalypse…
