In Deep Rising, Captain John Finnegan and Joey are hired to pilot a boat to a rendezvous point by Hanover, a mercenary. Hanover is shady, but John signs on anyway, unaware of what the mercs are planning.

Once they reach a luxury liner, John learns Hanover is preparing to rob everybody on board. However, they discover a sea monster has drunk (not eaten) all the passengers, save for a thief, Trillian, and the ship's corrupt owner, Canton. John couldn't imagine being stuck with worse company, but he decides to go along with them, believing in strength in numbers.

There's plenty of animosity in the group, but they usually have each other's backs, such as Joey handing Hanover a gun so that he can give himself a quick death when he's being swallowed by the leviathan. Unfortunately, Hanover tries to shoot Joey with the gun's only bullet, condemning himself to a slow and agonising demise.

Although Trillian is only looking out for herself initially, she gradually starts to care for John. Despite the fact John is hoping to escape the ship as quickly as possible, he sticks his neck out for the others, even when they repeatedly screw him over.
