20 Horror Movie Scenes That Make Absolutely No Sense
19. Orphan - They Should've Found Esther's Secret
Plot: Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard), who recently lost a child to stillbirth, decide to adopt a child. They go for a seemingly benevolent little girl named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrmann), but they slowly discover she's far more dangerous than she looks.
Orphan is among the best studio horror films of the 2000s. It's exciting, well-acted, has characters that you care about, and one of the most deliriously unhinged plot twists in horror history, so it's absolutely worth seeing. You will need to suspend a fair bit of disbelief, though.
As well as John being unrealistically oblivious to Esther's sinister behaviour, there's also the big reveal. Esther, as it turns out, isn't a little girl at all. She's 33 years old and she's got a rare form of dwarfism that makes her look a lot younger, allowing her to pass as a child. Esther, or Leena as she's actually called, is also a serial killer who's murdered scores of people in the past.
As gloriously entertaining as this plot twist is, there is a scene earlier in the film where Esther's secret should've been unveiled. She was taken to hospital for an X-ray, and the people there should've been able to tell that Esther had the bone structure of an adult and therefore wasn't a child.
