20 Horror Movies Everyone Remembers For Just One Scene

With this Hong Kong-Singaporean co-production, the Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus reads: "Conventional ghost tale with a few genuine scares." That couldn't be more accurate.

The Eye - in which Wong Kar-Wun (Angelica Lee), a blind violinist, gets an eye transplant only to discover that her new eyes can see ghosts - is a cliched and mediocre horror flick with a totally by-the-numbers plot, and the only reason it has endured as a minor cult classic is that it happens to have one or two really good frights. Most notably, it's got this terrifying scare in a lift. 

At the start of the scene, Wong is about to enter a lift, but she sees a creepy old man standing in the corner, unnerving her. However, two other people enter the lift happily, and she doesn't see the man in the CCTV... spooky. But it's just getting started. 

She enters another lift and slowly, but surely, that same old man floats along towards her, still turned away. As he begins to turn - showing his creepy-as-hell, dead face - and the musical score thumps frantically away, the suspense builds up to nail-biting levels, and when Wong finally escapes the lift just as the ghost is about to touch her, you'll almost collapse with relief. 

This is a legitimately fantastic scare that, unlike many horror films of its era, prioritized build-up and atmosphere over gore or cheap shocks. It's the one thing from The Eye that's really worth remembering.
