An adaptation of the classic sci-fi horror game BioShock has been in the works since 2008, when Universal was announced to be distributing a big-budget blockbuster take helmed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean).

Development stalled, however, and by 2013, this version of the movie was cancelled, largely due to budgetary concerns and Verbinski's fair insistence that the film have an R rating.

In 2022, Netflix announced their own adaptation of BioShock, with Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games franchise) tapped to direct, though by 2024 business changes at Netflix had caused the project's budget to be revised down; rarely a good sign.

Earlier this year, producer Roy Lee claimed the film would ramp up in September once Lawrence completed post-production on his new picture, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, while Netflix and the game's publisher Take-Two are reportedly eager to get the film shooting soon to coincide with the release of the series' next video game, BioShock 4.
