After directing 2009's Survival of the Dead, George A. Romero began conceiving an intended finale to his legendary franchise of zombie films, Twilight of the Dead.

Romero got as far as co-writing a story treatment for the post-apocalyptic final chapter, but passed away in 2017 before it could get made.

That seemed to be the end of the matter for a time, then, but in 2021 Romero’s widow Suzanne Romero oversaw the completion of the script, with original co-writer Paolo Zelati onboard to finish the job.

After years of delays, the sequel, which follows a mother and child as they seek safety from the undead on an island overrun with them, is set to imminently start shooting, with The Paz Brothers (The Golem and Plan A) directing, while Kate Beckinsale stars, replacing original lead Milla Jovovich.

Nobody can say if the final George A. Romero project will be worth the near-20 years of waiting, but in the next year or two we're all going to find out for ourselves.
