Adapting an acclaimed short film into a feature is one thing, but what about taking an American folk song - better known for its iconic '90s Eurodance version, no less - and making a movie out of it?

Well, that's exactly what's happening with "Cotton Eye Joe" - the 19th century ditty which became a global mega-hit as performed by Swedish group Rednex in 1994.

Filmmaker Nick Merola will be reimagining the song as a backwoods slasher movie that, in Merola's words, will be "dripping with blood, dark humor, and practical effects."

The plot will revolve around four friends whose car breaks down on a remote country road, and when they seek refuge at a nearby farm, they end up rousing Cotton Eye Joe - a seemingly unstoppable serial killer whose legend is tied to his land's dark past.

Though the film's recent Kickstarter drive failed to raise its target of $100,000, that certainly doesn't mean the film isn't going to happen - in a boom period for slasher flicks cashing in on pop-culture staples, there's still a fair chance this one finds funding elsewhere and actually gets made.
