9. Kidprint - V/H/S/Halloween
The V/H/S franchise has never shied away from the deeply twisted, but in its most recent entry, V/H/S/Halloween, it served up arguably the single darkest short in the anthology series' history.
Alex Ross Perry's short "Kidprint" takes place in 1992 in an American town where a number of children and teenagers have been kidnapped and murdered. Tim (Stephen Gurewitz), who runs a "Kidprint" child identification service from his video store - a very real program that existed in the 1990s - eventually learns that his employee Bruce (Carl Garrison) has been using Tim's videos to capture and kill children in the store.
Perry even shows footage of Bruce brutalising some of the children, and though Tim attacks Bruce upon learning the truth, some of the kidnapped kids in the store mistake him for their kidnapper, killing Tim before Bruce reappears and kills the kids.
In the end, Tim is framed for the killings, and Bruce takes over the rental store and its Kidprint program, allowing him to continue killing undetected.
Even for V/H/S, this was dark, and considering the kookier, less-serious nature of most of the other shorts in this year's anthology, some felt that it didn't quite fit the general vibe, for better or worse.
