20 Perfect Scenes In Otherwise Terrible Horror Movies
4. Frozen - The Wolf Attack
Frozen is a largely disappointing horror film that takes the promising (albeit implausible) scenario of three people trapped on a ski lift and fails to do an awful lot with it. Most of it is three unlikable characters yelling at each other, yet there is one particular scene that will stay with you in the best way. That is the death of Dan (Kevin Zegers), which is incredibly intense stuff, mainly because of how little you see.
From Jaws to The Blair Witch Project, countless horror films have proven that the power of imagination and suggestion is often far scarier than anything on-screen, and Dan's death reaffirms that once again. He's viciously mauled to death by wolves after falling from the ski lift, while the other two leads are powerless to help.
You hear the horrific sounds of Dan's painful death, but the camera mainly focuses on Joe and Parker (Shawn Ashmore and Emma Bell) being forced to listen. Joe holds Parker's face so that she can't see her boyfriend's gory demise, while he's doing his absolute best to keep his eyes shut.
The fact that we hear all of Dan's death without properly seeing it made it so much more disturbing, and besides, few scenarios are more disturbing than being powerless to help as a loved one is violently killed right in front of you. As much as it deserved a better movie, this pure nightmare fuel was great filmmaking all the same.
