And finally, there's Sinister 2, a profoundly underwhelming sequel to Sinister, a vastly superior work that has deservedly become a minor cult classic. This one is bland, lacking in scares, and sorely missing the presence of Ethan Hawke, but those tapes, on the other hand? They are all legitimately fantastic, and it's still hard to believe they exist within what is otherwise such a lame duck of a sequel. 

As established in the first film, the demonic antagonist Bughuul would destroy entire families, possessing a single child to kill the others before they were claimed, and the child would make snuff films of the murders. In this sequel, we see some new ones that weren't in the original, and if anything, they're even gnarlier for the most part. 

We're treated to families being electrocuted, buried alive in the snow, fed to alligators, and worst of all, there's the Sunday Service one. In that one, family members are nailed to the floor of a church and have rats placed atop them. A bucket is then placed atop and heated, so that the rats eat through their stomachs and kill them. Just thinking about it gives one the shudders. 

Every time one of these tapes is put on, complete with their creepy music, horrifying violence, and unsettling, voyeuristic cinematography, it really does feel like you're watching a different movie altogether - one so, so much better than the one we ultimately got. Once again, greatness can come from anywhere.
