Chris Stuckmann's promising feature debut Shelby Oaks follows Mia (Camille Sullivan), a woman desperate to find her younger sister Riley (Sarah Durn), a paranormal investigator who went missing in the abandoned town of Shelby Oaks.

In the third act, Mia eventually finds Riley chained up in a basement by followers of the incubus known as Tarion, where she's been forcibly impregnated and has recently given birth to a baby boy.

Mia escapes with Riley and the child, but that's not the end - a traumatised Riley believes that the baby is possessed and later attempts to smother it, only for Mia to intervene and accidentally knock her sister out of the nearby window.

Riley is still alive but not for long, as she's soon enough torn apart by hellhounds, leaving Mia to care for the child.

The ending ultimately implies that this was always Tarion's plan, for Riley to give birth to the baby and Mia - who has been unable to conceive a child - to raise it.

There are some solid ideas here, but Riley's death is almost comically abrupt and, one might say, just a bit too nasty an end for someone who, let's remember, is a rape victim.

It felt too cruel to be entertaining, honestly, and left a sour taste as the end credits rolled.
