1 Overlooked Gem Song From Every Iron Maiden Album

4. The Longest Day - A Matter Of Life & Death

When 'A Matter of Life and Death' was first released, Iron Maiden did something rarely done before or since. While touring the album, the sextet played the entire album from beginning to end, and though in theory this was a great idea, as this is arguably Maiden's strongest ever album, many fans weren't happy that some of the classics were dropped from the setlist.

Since then, this album has shockingly been all but left behind in terms of live shows, and like with 'Brave New World', any of these tracks could arguably be called overlooked.

There are several epics on the album, but 'The Longest Day' should be up there with the most iconic songs in the band's catalogue, it is that good. This is a shuddering look into the realities of war, the fear, the uncertainty, and the horror of being a soldier on the front line, based specifically during D-Day.

Anthemic choruses, a darker and quite heavy tone, and the fact that Nicko McBrain truly turns his drum kit into falling bombs towards the start of track go towards making this as powerful as it is. Perhaps slower than many considered the best in Maiden's long history, 'The Longest Day' is no lesser for it.
