10 '60s Hard Rock Albums You Need To Listen To
3. The Doors - The Doors
Looking back on the psychedelic scene, there wasn't nearly as much dangerous sounding rock music as you probably remember. Whenever you look for the '60s equivalent of the Dazed and Confused soundtrack, you end up getting a lot more folk rock songs, which is not really a good sign. In the middle of the Haight Asbury scene though, there was one band that was about to unleash their own brand of mayhem to the rock world.
Given how much of a hand they had in hard rock, it strange to look back on how eclectic the Doors' debut was. For all of the rock songs like Break On Through, there were also showtunes like Alabama Song and even some delves into the world of blues and jazz every now and again. The reason it all fit together though was the aura of the band, which seemed to be as dark as it was intellectual.
Where most bands were looking to just drop acid, Jim Morrison's lyrics were pure poetry put to music, especially towards the tail end of the song The End, where he practically becomes a different person and makes music that sounds almost demonic in its tone. This isn't the peace and love '60s that you see drawn on posters. This is the drugs and death portion of the decade where everything starts to fall apart.
