10 '80s Songs You Totally Forgot Were Great

8. Men Without Hats: The Safety Dance (1982)

The Safety Dance was the first in a string of cultural landmarks, during this decade, that used 'dance' as a means of protest. In 1984, Footloose saw Kevin Bacon battling a fun-hating antagonist, with his expressive shape cutting. And again, in 1987, Dirty Dancing, captured peoples imagination, when Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey defied conservative expectations, with their suggestive two step.

But the original 'dance as a form of protest' was the Safety Dance. Although many critics interpreted the track as a metaphor for safe sex, the truth was far more simplistic. Ivan Doroschuk wrote the song after he was thrown out of a club for dancing too enthusiastically. His outrage at this injustice, was to write lyrics defiantly expressing his god-given right to bust some moves. The song was accompanied by an utterly nonsensical music video - which involved Doroschuk, prancing around a small English village, with a dwarf dressed as a jester, and a beautiful blonde in tow.

Even the most generous of individuals would have to admit, Men Without Hats, haven't contribute much to the world of music... but, after releasing a song as enjoyable as this, they've earned their place in the annals of history (or at the very least, in a WhatCulture list).
