10 '90s Bands Everyone Forgets About
3. Butthole Surfers
Not every band in the rock scene is exactly looking to get famous. No matter how much their label might like to promote them and their tours might sell out, the more avant garde sides of rock aren't really meant to go on the charts all that often. If there was any band that should have had that kind of label pre-stamped on them, it was the Butthole Surfers.
Down to their innuendo-laden name, the Surfers were always looking to make some of the craziest rock music known to man, with songs that were pulling as much from Captain Beefheart as they were from the Pixies. Going to the psychedelic school of thought, their first handful of albums are an endurance test for fans of the eclectic side of rock, as they took every single crazy idea that popped into their head and put it down on tape. They did have a core fanbase though, one of which was a young Kurt Cobain.
After Nirvana hit it big, The Surfers also managed to get a huge boost in sales, eventually finding themselves on top of the rock charts for a few weeks with their one-off single Pepper. Though they never really saw the same kind of mammoth success again, the 'anything goes' attitude they sported throughout their career has certainly left its mark on the next generation of DIY musicians.
